Escrow contracts, an AI project manager and early previews

Hire with money held in escrow, keep work on track with an AI project manager, and preview your app while it finishes building.

Hiring across borders only works when both sides trust the money. A founder will not pay in advance to someone they have never met, and a freelancer will not start work without knowing the payment exists. For decades the answer was a bank, a lawyer or a reputation built over years. For people who need to start this week, none of those is available.

July was about making both halves of that trust true, and about keeping the work moving once it begins. The first is escrow: money held by a neutral party and released against delivered work. The second is an AI project manager that watches the plan so that nobody has to chase.

Contracts with escrow

Every engagement on Afren runs on a contract with milestones, which are the stages of the work and the payment attached to each. The sequence is deliberate.

  • The client funds escrow. The amount comes from your wallet balance, so top it up first. The breakdown, including the platform's charge, is shown before you confirm. You will find current charges on the pricing page.
  • The talent signs. Signing is only possible once escrow is funded, so the money for the work exists before the work starts. Both parties receive a copy of the signed contract by email.
  • Each milestone is released when approved. When a milestone is delivered, the client approves it and that milestone's share goes to the talent. The rest stays held.
  • If something goes wrong, you can raise a dispute from the contract, and our team reviews it. If a contract ends early, approved milestones are settled and the remainder returns to the client.

The design reasoning is that escrow should behave like a one-way ratchet. Funds move from none, to held, to partly released, to fully released or refunded, and the last two are final. Money cannot be released unless it was held, and a settled escrow cannot be held again. Repeating a release that already happened has no further effect, so a retry after a poor connection cannot pay a milestone twice. Only the client on a contract can fund it or approve its milestones.

One more rule shapes what you see. We only tell people that money has moved after the movement has been recorded. A talent is never emailed that they have been paid for a payment that did not complete. We also run checks that compare what each wallet says is held in escrow against the contracts behind it, because a ledger you cannot reconcile is not one you should trust.

An AI project manager

Once you have a team, an AI project manager turns your scope into tasks and milestones with due dates. You can add, edit or remove any of them at any time. Talent move tasks along and flag blockers, so everyone can see what is done, what is next and what is stuck. Task reminders go out in each person's local morning rather than at a fixed hour for everyone.

The part that deserves care is money. The AI project manager checks delivered work against what the milestone promised. When it is confident a milestone is complete, it releases that milestone's payment from escrow automatically. When it is not, the decision stays with you, and you can run the check yourself at any time. Completing a milestone and releasing its payment are saved together, so you never see a milestone marked complete with its payment left behind.

We chose a bounded role for the AI on purpose. It can release a payment only for a milestone it is confident about, and the client can always approve a milestone or run the check directly. A project manager that never acts is a reminder tool, and one that always acts is a risk. This sits in between.

Team chat and progress reports

Each project has a team chat for the talent on it, with the AI project manager in the room. Mention it to ask for advice, to adjust the timeline when plans change, or to help the team settle a disagreement. Timeline changes are limited to a short extension, so a schedule cannot be stretched without limit. Only talent who are accepted on the project can post.

Clients get progress reports whenever they ask and after milestones complete. Each report is saved in the project and sent by email, so a client in a different timezone can read it when it suits them. Talent see all their tasks across every project in My Tasks, where they update status and flag blockers.

Designs, previews and changes in plain words

Three changes shorten the path from idea to something you can click.

  • Designs before code. Pick brand colours, or choose between three design directions, before full designs are generated. Then click through an interactive prototype before any code is written.
  • Preview while you build. Open a working preview of your app as soon as the frontend is ready, while the rest of the build finishes.
  • Change your app by describing it. Use the refine bar to say what you want, for example "make the hero dark", and the preview updates.

You can also add context to a scope at any point, and Afren re-scopes your project from what you added.

Money, identity and your account

Clients and talent can verify an ID, and talent can fill in their profile from a CV. Uncertain results are reviewed by a person. Talent see their balance and transactions in their own currency, and each credit or debit shows the amount you paid in your own currency, so your records match your bank. Talent can set up a local bank account, picked from a searchable list, or international payouts. Skill assessments are generated for the talent's own profession.

In Settings you choose exactly which emails and push notifications you receive. You can delete your account there: it is disabled straight away and permanently removed after 14 days. Profile pages gain documents and social links. Our Docs, News, Careers and Community pages are also live.

What this means for you

You can hire someone you have never met, because the money exists before they start and moves only as work is approved. You can keep a project on schedule without chasing, and keep the final say over every payment. And you can see and change your app in plain words before anyone writes code.
